** The Future of Occupational Safety and Health in the EU event
Held on 18 – 19 October, Liverpool
The world of work is constantly changing, and occupational safety and health (OSH) organisations need to look ahead to remain effective and become more so.
As well as needing to be able to successfully deal with new ways of working, new technologies and associated risks, OSH organisations need to find new levers to help improve safety and health. This will be in addition to continuing to use tried and trusted methods when and where they remain the most effective means of supporting occupational safety and health.
This means looking at ways of complementing existing regulatory and enforcement activities with new approaches that improve health and safety. Securing compliance is important but additional approaches need to be used to help drive health and safety awareness and improvement. To be successful, any new approaches need to be recognised as beneficial by employers and employees alike. We must demonstrate that improving health and safety can increase business performance, and that a healthy and in-work workforce will provide the people needed to meet the Lisbon targets.
The EU OSH strategy has been in place since 2002 and is due to be updated in 2007. The conference looked at how current activities are helping to achieve the aims of the strategy and how the next strategy can help to further improve OSH in the EU.
18 October
Conference Chair Bill Callaghan made the opening speech.

The second day of the event was a meeting of Member States OSH Directors General / Chief Executives, to start laying the foundations of what the next EU OSH strategy might look like to provide the best platform to improve health and safety and act as an enterprise enabler.
Outcomes
Following the conference, the attached letter and paper have been sent to the European Commission. They include themes that Directors General believe should have an important place in the new OSH strategy. The letter and paper have been prepared by the UK Presidency and agreed by Austria and Finland, who will hold the Presidency after the UK.
